Blue Christmas

What are good songs for a Blue Christmas / Longest Night service? I actually have never been to one but I'm helping to pick out some songs for my church's service this year. My understanding is its a Christmas service that has more of a focus on the healing we find in Jesus, and that he came for a broken world; that Christmas isn't just about happy angels and snowflakes.

We ended up going with these songs which seemed to work pretty well:

  • All I Ever Get For Christmas Is Blue by Over The Rhine which we did as pre-service. It's not a worship song but captured the blue feeling pretty well.
  • In The Bleak Midwinter
  • O Come O Come Emmanuel
  • Hungry by Katheryn Scott
  • Give Me Jesus by Jeremy Camp - "You can have all this world, just give me Jesus"
  • Nearer My God To Thee - Cling to God even in dark times

I'd love to hear other suggestions.

Breath of Heaven
Here With Us
Labor of Love

just some "maybe these can help" ideas that jumped into my head.

We did "He Who is Mighty" last year, from Sovereign Grace Music. I don't think we did it with a whole congregation, but that album, Prepare Him Room, has some good tracks that could be used.

Also, my pastor and I also wrote a "new chorus" to "What Child Is This" but I'm not sure how to upload and share that. So, if you're interested, let me know.

I used "Hymn of Promise" by Natalie Sleeth for that service it's in the United Methodist Hymnal, very powerful for comforting those who have lost loved ones.
